Color Mixing in Kindergarten

Our first project in Kindergarten began with a book called mouse paint!

I love this book because it is PERFECT to teach about color mixing! Teaching Kindergarten that only 3 colors make up every color in the whole world is a difficult concept to grasp... This book not only illustrates this concept well, but it also allows me to refer to some of the quotes from the book when students get to mix their own colors!

Mrs. Ellis class

We started off drawing birds. These cute little circle birdies are easy to draw because students can trace a circle then add a beak, eyes, wings, tail, and feet. Once the birds were drawn in crayon we began to paint!

Students learned how to make Orange first. I told them to make a pile of red on their paper palette. Next, they take a scoop of yellow and pile it right on top of their red...

With their brush they can "do a little dance" like the mice from our book to mix the colors. Once they get a nice pretty orange, they get to paint their birdie.

First project for First Grade

In first grade we started off the year completing a color wheel watercolor picture. I love this project because we not only get to talk about color, but we also do crayon resist!

Once we had everything colored in using crayon, I had students use a white crayon to make rain drops. Even though they couldn't see the raindrops when they drew them on their white paper they eventually appeared when they painted on top. I LOVE to see the expressions on my first graders faces when they see their raindrops suddenly appear! It pure amazement!

They are such hard workers!

earth without ART would just be EH...

Get it???

My most wonderful teacher's aide, Claire not only helps me with cleaning, prep, and helping out with my kiddos, she also is a VERY talented artist! Sadly Claire could not take my class this year, but thankfully she is able to be creative when I don't put her to work :)

Here is Claire's awesome Chalkboard drawing. The paint on the back of my white shelves began to peel off so she painted the back and turned it into a chalk board. SO COOL. I wish I had taken a "before" picture...

Thanks Claire!! :)

Fun Fun Fun after school

Some of my second grade girls came to me after school requesting to do a Junior High project that saw on display. Seeing their eagerness and enthusiasm, how could I resist??? This was their reaction when I told them I had to leave...

This so far 2 day lesson has been full of similes, laughs, and of course art.

Clearly we had some fun.

More pics to come of the girl's finished projects! :)
