Color Mixing in Kindergarten

Our first project in Kindergarten began with a book called mouse paint!

I love this book because it is PERFECT to teach about color mixing! Teaching Kindergarten that only 3 colors make up every color in the whole world is a difficult concept to grasp... This book not only illustrates this concept well, but it also allows me to refer to some of the quotes from the book when students get to mix their own colors!

Mrs. Ellis class

We started off drawing birds. These cute little circle birdies are easy to draw because students can trace a circle then add a beak, eyes, wings, tail, and feet. Once the birds were drawn in crayon we began to paint!

Students learned how to make Orange first. I told them to make a pile of red on their paper palette. Next, they take a scoop of yellow and pile it right on top of their red...

With their brush they can "do a little dance" like the mice from our book to mix the colors. Once they get a nice pretty orange, they get to paint their birdie.
